The opening of Brisbane's new runway
Brisbane’s new runway is a project that has been five decades in the planning and under construction for eight years. On Sunday 12 July 2020, Brisbane's new runway officially opened. This video recaps this historic day for BNE.
The first departure was Virgin Australia flight VA 781 from Brisbane to Cairns. This flight marked the anniversary of the very first flight between Brisbane and Tropical North Queensland by Barrier Reef Airways which took off 73 years to the day on 12 July 1947.
In an Australian first for a capital city airport an uninhibited, spectacular aerobatics show of four historic aircraft conducted a flyover of Brisbane’s new runway in a nod to BNE’s military history. The Spitfire MK-XVI was the first aircraft to land on Brisbane's new runway, thanks to our friends at Fighter Pilot Adventure Flights.
